Malbec is a unique grape variety which resembles the delicate flavours and textures of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This wine is an accepted variety in the Bordeaux Appellation. A time-honoured location for Malbec is Cahors in the South West of France where it is known as Auxerrois. Argentina is also a well-known location for Malbec wine production in the New World. In Australia, Malbec has been used for several decades as a blending wine with Cabernet and Merlot, and recently with Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Tempranillo. Malbec usually requires extra time on the vines in order to accumulate the aromas of plum and anise. Malbec has an average cellaring potential with a span of up to 10 years. Modern wine makers are able to create Malbec wines that are balanced in acidity and with smooth tannins. Malbec is typically medium to full-bodied. Malbec can reveal its rich quality with any meat dish, although roasted lamb is a particularly good choice with this fine wine straight from the oven.
