Marsanne is a white grape from Rhone Valley. Yet, this wine has now been gaining the recognition it deserves for the grapes grown in the wider world. In Switzerland Marsanne is known as ‘Ermitage’ – a deep yellow wine which is high in alcohol, low in acidity and often thick textured. It has a bouquet of ripe peaches and almond kernels. In Rhone, France Marsanne has a fruity and honeysuckle-like scent. On the pallet, Marsanne from France possesses crisp acidity and flavours of jasmine and citrus. In Australia, the Goulbourn Valley and Yarra Valley (Victoria), wooded and unwooded Marsanne on its own or blended with other wines (commonly Viogner) are frequent. The Goulbourn Valley Marsanne is tout and dry, resonating the tastes of lemon and citrus. Marsanne is a viable wine for cellaring for a few years. The generously oaky styles of Marsanne are quite frequent in Australia and go well with light cuisine, salads and un-spiced food.
