Mourvedre is know as Monastrell in Spain, and Mataro in Australia. This grape is also characterized by its thick skin and capricious reactions to climate and weather change. Pure Mourvedre has a real red individuality, high in alcohol, tannin, acid and an explosive bouquet. The nose is described as gamay, leathery, with a fine aroma of blackberries, black pepper, cloves, thyme, cinnamon, as well as a characteristic earthiness. This grape variety makes big, powerful, tannic wines with resonance of black fruit and berries and sweet spice. Mataro has an attractive intense garnet red with a purple rim. It is often used as a blend. It is usually blended with Shiraz and Grenache. On its own, Monastrell has a unique very rich individual taste. A strong flavoured meat or creamy dish is recommended to accompany this wine.
