Muscat is large family of white grapes, with bewildering list of names, the most well know ones are ‘Muscat de Frontignan’ and ‘Muscat d’Alexandrie’ (Muscat of Alexandria). The range of wine styles varies from dry to intensely sweet, from low alcohol sparklers to fortified dessert wines. The fresh grape scent and orange blossom perfume is common in the Muscat grape. Australian Muscat is used to produce many styles of wine, among them sticky liquors. Muscat d’Alexandrie’ is known as Lexia within Australia. This medium sweet wine with real fruit flavours has its own consumer niche within Australia. Rutherglen (Victoria) is renowned for its Muscat and among the great fortified Muscat, the region also produces dry and semi-dry wines from different varieties of this grape. Lighter styles of this wine require the grapes to be harvested early in order to preserve the orange-pith flavour, acidity and crisp nature. Colours of such wines vary from pale to golden yellow. The most common way to enjoy dry Muscat wines is as a nicely chilled aperitif. This wine is also a good complement to Asian dishes.
