Muscat is large family of white grapes, with bewildering list of names, the most well know ones are ‘Muscat de Frontignan’ and ‘Muscat d’Alexandrie’. The range of wine styles varies from dry to intensely sweet, from a low alcohol sparklers to fortified dessert wines. The fresh grape scent and orange blossom perfume is common in the Muscat grape. Australian Muscat is used to produce many styles of wine, among them, the most popular are sticky liquors from Rutherglen (Victoria) and the Riverina (NSW). Often, Muscat in Australia is fortified with grape spirit in hot conditions. This allows Muscat to achieve a liquor state. This wine will keep for up to 50 years. Rutherglen (Victoria) is renowned for its fortified Muscats, where dessert Muscat wine styles have been made from the 1850’s, from the Muscat a Petit Grains (meaning Muscat with small berries). It is common practice for fortified Muscat producers to blend wine from different years. A well balanced wine poises the sweetness with acidity and oak compounds to give a dry finish. To find your favorite, sample different styles, origin and alcohol levels. Muscat is rich and sweet, good with dried fruit, nuts, chocolate and cakes. An ideal aperitif.
