Some wine writers call it “poor man’s Chardonnay”. For those who prefer milder wines with more subtle aromas, Pinot Blanc is the best choice. Fresh, clean and smooth to the finish, often medium bodied with good fruit acidity. This white wine is unique in its relatively high acidity and tannin levels. In Australia theses tannin and acidity levels are considerably lower due to the warmer climate. Good Pinot Blanc varieties possess light, very well balanced aromas. Pinot Blanc possesses a very pale straw like colour, with soft hints of peach and pear. This wine is fresh and leathery with a sense of minerals in the after-taste. Best drunk and enjoyed when young and try as many different producers and brands as you can to find your favourite. Serve chilled and match with light food such as seafood, fish, salads and pasta.
