Pinot Gris varies greatly in flavour and appearance according to the region and climate where the grape gas been grown. Pinot Gris is also a wine which is known by many different names. In Germany, the lively dry styles from Baden are called Grauburgunder, in Austria Rulдnder, in Italy Pinot Grigio (famously dry, lemony and sharp), in Hungary Szurkebarat, and in France it is Pinot Gris (rich, soft and rounded, unlike the Italian style). The flavour spectrum of Pinot Gris is generally fresher than Chardonnay, with lemon, apple and fresh pear characters. If you prefer tropical and honeysuckle flavours, a riper variety is recommended. Tasmania, New Zealand, Mornington Peninsula, Adelaide Hills are proving to be an excellent area for Pinot Gris. Good food matches include salads, oysters, shellfish, mushrooms and white meats.
