Australia has a very old wine making history, which almost dates back to its colonial past, and there are many areas where excellent sparkling wine grapes can be grown. Australia’s first, sparkling Burgundy was produced in 1881. This was the ancestor to Australia’s famous Sparkling Shiraz, which broadly encapsulated wines produced from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and many other grapes. Sparkling red wine is the one of the most versatile wines of Australian producers. They are dry, and encompass the character of the variety from which they are made and their respective terroirs. Sparkling red wines are rich and complex with long finishes. The bubbles make them more food friendly than a regular wine. The red colour is acquired by leaving the skins of the grape within the fermenting juice. Good red sparkling wine can be quite pricey, however, they can be worth the money as the method with which the wines are made is very similar to Methode Champenoise, which is very extensive in nature. Sparkling red wine should be served slightly chilled. They are great with moderately strong flavoured food or on their own.
