One of the great varieties from the Rhone Valley, France where the vine grows among Marsanne, Viogner and others. It is generally accepted that Roussanne is a better quality grape variety than Marsanne, but is not easy to grow, and is therefore rarer. The Roussane grape makes wines which are strong in character and complexity. The bouquet of mature wines possesses the distinct smell of roasted nuts, hay and almond kernels. Roussanne and Marsanne are also renowned for their complementary blending. In Australia, Roussanne is supremely rich and full-bodied especially if grown in warmer areas. Domestic excellent locations for Roussanne are the Yarra Valley and Goulburn Valley (Victoria). Roussanne goes perfectly with white meat.
