Verdelho is a grape which amongst other aristocrats, such as Sercial, Bual and Malvasia are used in the production of Madeira. This white grape variety originated in Portugal and Spain. Verdelho has a flavorsome palate and a full-bodied nature. Although it is an excellent variety on its own, it blends well with Chardonnay and Semillon. The Western Australian Verdelho is fruity with a honeysuckle vein, whilst the Hunter Valley Verdelho allows for a more citrus like, tangy, mellow and spicy taste. Different producers of Verdelho create various wine styles ranging from sweet with balancing acidity to generously flavoured. The cellaring potential for Verdelho is not one which should exceed 2 years, this wine is great when it is young and fresh. The Australian version of Verdelho is particularly well accompanied with chicken, pork, veal and roasted vegetables. Sweeter styles of Verdelho are scrumptious with Asian food.
