WineLook weekly (29-August-2007 )
review Another star, which compared favorably with the better Australian Sparkling was Sparkling Shiraz from VineCrest Estate Tanunda. At the end of our August journey, we attended a celebration of Australia’s finest wines run by ‘Wine Focus Australia’ at the museum of Contemporary Art at Sydney’s Circular Quay, opposite the famous Opera House. This splendidly organized event allowed us to meet many wine makers including several old acquaintances, and also to attend several master classes. These were held in a particularly harmonious atmosphere, away from the hustle and bustle. Our favourite chairman was Sergio Garlei from Garlei Vineyards who spoke with charm and authority.
Chardonnay, that impressed us, included Dromana Estate, Possums Wines, Mistletoe Wines. Pinot Noir, that we enjoyed, included Southerland Estate, Carlei wines and Abbey Rock. Among all flavours whites, we preferred Dromano estate Pinot Gris and Viogner from Possums Wines. Another wine that caught our attention was Trentham Estate’s 2004 “La Famiglia” Nebbiolo, a grape originally grown in Italy.
Mixing work and pleasure, we were delighted to meet John and Sue Cornow from 1847 Fine Wines from the Barossa Valley, two of the nicest people you would ever meet. We were attracted by their approach to winemaking where quality is the keynote. Their Petit Verdot reflects the specialness of their Terroir of Rowland Flat. Skillfully made Semillon draws on all flavours of the grape and definitely will improve as it ages. WineLook will be delighted to put such a fine example of wine craft on our website. Apart from the master class offerings, we noted Chardonnay 2003 from Eagle Vale (Margaret River).
A stand out first time exhibitor in Sydney was Poverty Hill Wines from Eden Valley (Michael Datta) who’s skillfully made Shiraz 2004 left an unforgettable impression. Of course, the inimitable Les Sampson (pictured) from Abbey Rock, can be proud of his wines, particularly the reds – Shiraz- Grenache 2005 and Sangiovese 2006.
